Don’t tell the TikTokers, but…

…Instagram is the place to build an audience right now.

Most social media platforms keep their algorithm secrets under lock and key. But Instagram has been very clear about what it takes to succeed on the platform. So today, we’re sharing 3 ways to get more engagement on the ‘gram.

In today's newsletter:

  • 3 ways to increase your engagement on Instagram (the platform hasn’t been shy about sharing how to go viral)

  • Tesco reaches icon status by removing brand name (find out whether we think this was a good move or not)

  • Trend plug - You’re ruining it

3 Ways to Increase Your Engagement on Instagram

Instagram is the place to be for creators who want to build an engaged audience. The platform has made it clear that the best way to grow your account is by posting consistently, replying to comments, and creating shareable content.

Instagram has not been hiding how their algorithm works. And, for the most part, none of it is lies!

Who knew a day like this would come... A social platform giving sound advice for creators that are implementable and give the results promised... 👀

Right now, the Instagram algorithm is dominating.

These days, growth on Instagram is unmatched by any other platform. Nothing I am going to share in this article is anything new.

But these are my top 3 ways to increase your engagement on Instagram that I have found to be the most successful in growing my own account (@jonymlee).

1. Consistency is key

I know you're thinking, 'Wow what a new perspective! How insightful! Never heard that one before!!!!!!'

BUT there's a reason clichés are cliché. They continue to be true no matter the time, place, or topic.

Consistency helps in a multitude of ways e.g. your own personal learning, it increases touchpoints to your brand, it generates more data etc.

BUT when it comes to increased engagement specifically, Instagram favours consistency. The algorithm is at its prime for creators who are putting out a consistent flow of content.

It's as if Instagram can recognise creator efforts and are rewarding them for it. This leads to more opportunity to find new audiences and increase your reach.

Tesco Reaches Icon Status by Removing Brand Name

Tesco's new ICONS campaign uses only high-quality product photography—no branding at all. Because if your brand is big enough, you don’t even need to use your logo for the public to recognise your advertising.

Sex sells.

But so does a good-looking croissant.

Because we're all entranced by what we desire, but what we desire usually changes from person to person.

Maybe you want a sports car or an expensive pair of shoes.

For me, it's a specific jar of supplements. But I'm weird like that.

Yet there seems to be one thing we all desire. It's a thing we all crave between the hours of 4-8pm:

Ingredients for dinner.

And Tesco has taken advantage of this in their ICONS campaign.

Yep, Tesco has given some true icons (nice pieces of produce) the reverence they've always deserved in their new out-of-home advertisements.

How, you ask?

Trend Plug - You’re Ruining It

Honestly, I have no idea where the original video this trend comes from is, but this edited version is hilarious.

It's just a lady filming herself laughing in the rain, then another lady decided to stitch it that video.

And, for some reason she's angry and says, 'You and I both know,' but before she is able to hate on this lady, the edited version just cuts there. For some reason it's just too funny, kind of giving vine energy in a way.

TikTokers have taken this sound to talk about situations where they're enjoying themselves, and then something randomly ruins their fun. For example, 'me enjoying life for a fraction of a second - the 7 dollars and 15 cents in my bank account' and 'me skipping breakfast and lunch - me going home eating enough to feed a family of 6.'

How you can jump on this trend:

Use this sound and add on-screen text of a situation that has you loving life, then something that just ruins it. Split up your on-screen text, using the first half of it (why you're happy) during the first video (the lady laughing). Put in the second half of your OST (what has ruined your vibe) when the sound says, 'You and I both know.'

A few ideas to get you started:

  • Me and my work bestie laughing away - our manager behind us

  • Me after completing all my tasks for today - reading my to-do list and realising I forgot one

  • Me trying to stop myself from a menty b - my client sending me an angry email

Q - I've been helping my dad get his personal training business onto social media, but he really hates being on camera. How do I convince him he needs to make video content for IG? - Gareth

Hey Gareth!

Well, if he's adamant he doesn't want to be on video, I'd stop trying to convince him. If you force someone to be in content, they are going to look super uncomfortable because they'll be hating every minute of it.

Here's an idea--just make video content he doesn't have to be in. Since he's a personal trainer, you could get him to write down a few simple workouts he uses for his clients. You can turn those into videos with text on a background and add energetic music.

You could also try having him write down a list, like '5 healthy habits to start your day off right' (or whatever you think is relevant!). Film him writing them on a notepad, then turn that into a Reel. Spend some time scrolling for inspiration. Remember, inspo can come from anywhere--it doesn't have to just be from others in the same industry.

He might change his mind about being on camera one day. But in the meantime, there are plenty of other video content styles you can try!
