The best delivery in a maternity ward?

It’s not a beautiful baby. No, it’s a Burger King Whopper.

Or that’s what the brand’s new campaign, ‘Bundles of Joy,’ wants us to believe. Burger King knows every new mum has post-labour cravings for a good meal. So they set up a hotline and brought free Whoppers to maternity wards across the UK. I guess you could call that a special delivery?

In today's newsletter:

  • Burger King makes fast food sooo heartwarming (find out why they delivered free Whoppers to new mums in this campaign)

Burger King Makes Fast Food Look Soooo Heartwarming

Burger King's 'Bundles of Joy' campaign captures the emotional experience of childbirth by featuring real footage of new mothers enjoying a BK meal post-labour. To connect with their audience even further through this campaign, the brand also set up a hotline offering free Whoppers to new mums.

When I woke up this morning, there were a few things I knew I could expect from the work day.

I'd have my morning meetings, enjoy a lil coffee, meet with a client...

What I didn't expect was to be sitting at my desk tearing up over a Burger King advertisement.

But BK's new campaign has turned me into a sentimental mess.

The video ad starts with the text 'September 26 (The day most babies are born in the UK).'

Ok, nice, we all know about champagne babies—the ones that arrive nine months after New Year's Eve.

Simple, polished. You're left wondering what's next.

And what comes next is real footage of women in labour. There's pain, tears, laughter.

We see brief clips from inside hospital rooms and everything that accompanies waiting for a baby to arrive.

Tubes of laughing gas, brief vlog-style birth updates, and pushing. There's fun music accompanying this, and it's entertaining to watch. It feels so human, like we're on this journey with the families.

Then the music stops and we hear the first cries.

The babies have arrived. (This is when the tears hit me, btw.)

And then the music is back, and we get the satisfying pleasure of watching these tired mums tucking into Burger King.

It Ends With Us Was a Marketing Fail—But a Box Office Win

The movie It Ends With Us stirred controversy because Blake Lively appeared to market the story, which was about domestic abuse, as a rom-com. However, the conversation around the movie just meant more people went to see it in theatres, making it a box office success.

The movie It Ends With Us has sparked countless emotions all around the globe.

Based on an adaptation of Colleen Hoover's infamous novel, this film was highly anticipated by millions. The surrounding controversy, however, began months before its release.

If you don’t know much about Colleen Hoover and her novel, let me fill you in.

It Ends With Us was published in 2016, but gained immense popularity in 2021 due to #booktok. Her books often explore romance and friendship and target teens and young adults.

But It Ends With Us is a little different.

This book follows the story of Lily Bloom, who is navigating a toxic relationship with her partner, Ryle, while also dealing with trauma from her late abusive father. While it is a story about love, and definitely has romance, it is not a love story.

So, why was it advertised as one?

And how was it still a success at the box office, despite this false advertising?

Trend Plug - I DON’T GIVE A PISS IF…

If you don't know, college football in America goes ABSOLUTELY STUPID.

And one Alabama fan has gone viral across TikTok for screaming, 'I don't give a piss if it's a bulldog, a bullfrog, or a bull dagger, GIVE ME ALABAMA.' For context, this was after their nail-biting win against the Georgia Bulldogs last week.

TikTokers have now taken the sound from this video, using it to express things they desperately want. For example, 'GIVE ME SOME DAMN POTATOES' or 'GIVE ME MY DAMN MONEY.'

How to jump on this trend:

While lip-syncing to this sound, simply use OST of 'I don't give a piss if it's...'

Then list 3 things that might mean you can't have something you are deeply craving right now.

A few ideas to get you started:

  • 'I don't give a piss if it's 9 AM, work just started, or that it's my third of the day, GIVE ME A DAMN COFFEE'

  • 'I don't give a piss if it's 1K, 10K, or 100K, GIVE ME SOME DAMN VIEWS/FOLLOWERS'

  • 'I don't give a piss if it's 1 hour, 2 hours, or 3 hours, GIVE ME SOME DAMN SLEEP'

Q - I’ve just started my first ever job in marketing and since in university a lot of what we learn is theoretical rather than practical, I’m finding it difficult to apply what I have learned into my job. What's your advice? -Cath

Hey Cath!

Yes, working it is a bit different to studying! But the fact that you've got a degree under your belt means you have a great foundational understanding of marketing.

Those theories you learned might not directly apply to what you're doing each day. But they will absolutely help you understand the psychology behind marketing, including how people think and why they do what they do.

So when you're in your job, try to draw on that knowledge as you think about why people engage with certain types of content over others. Ask yourself how certain messages tap into our motivations and others don't.

As far as feeling like you don't know what you're doing yet--that's so, so normal. There are many things you can only learn by doing.

So be like a sponge. Ask tons of questions, soak up as much as you can, and try to be ok with making mistakes. If you have that attitude, you'll look back on yourself in a few months and be amazed at how much you've grown.
