Coca-Cola Spiced ‘smells like feet’.

It’s also been described as tasting like a floral arrangement at your Aunt Gertrude’s funeral. 🤢

You know what it doesn’t taste like? An actually spicy drink (which is how it was advertised). Guess that’s why, after just 7 months on the shelves, Coca-Cola has axed this so-called ‘permanent’ flavour.

In today's newsletter:

  • Coca-Cola’s new ‘spicy’ drink fails to deliver (welp, that was a flop)

  • 5 Strategies to help you nail your next client pitch (seriously—it doesn’t have to be that scary!)

  • Trend plug - Why don’t you stay awhile?

  • Ask the Editor - How can I raise awareness for my charity?

Coca-Cola’s New ‘Spicy’ Drink Fails to Deliver

Coca-Cola’s attempt to jump on the spicy trend with ‘Coca-Cola Spiced’ fell flat. Although the product's advertising made us think it would be hot, it actually tasted more like a Christmas cake. So, just 7 months after this 'permanent flavour' was released, the brand has pulled it off shelves.

Ah, the rise of spice.

You know, chilli! Food that's hot. That makes your mouth go numb, at best. Or sends you into waves of nausea and sweating, at worst (depending on what you enjoy).

While many cultures have used chilli in their cuisine for centuries, it seems recently everything I want to buy has a chilli option.

There's a chilli pilsner at my favourite brewery up north.

Doritos is claiming to add heat to my tongue.

A peanut butter with hot sauce in it.

In fact, Jody Denton, Sr. Executive Research Chef for Frito-Lay, Inc., said in an interview with Prepared Foods that 'over the past several decades, consumer demand for spicy foods forms nearly a straight line up on a graph.'

So I'm not surprised Coca-Cola decided to jump on the chilli train, too.

And they were in a rush to make it to the train station, too (forgive me for rolling with this pun).

Earlier this year, they released 'Coca-Cola Spiced' as a permanent fixture in their range.

But, only seven months after its release, Coca-Cola has pulled their newest flavour from the market.

5 Strategies to Help You Nail Your Next Client Pitch

Pitching can be nerve-wracking, but being prepared is the best way to calm your nerves. So as you get ready for a pitch meeting, make sure you deeply understand your client and their audience.

You’re standing in front of the execs.

Your mouth is dry despite the excessive amount of water you’ve consumed leading up to this moment. Your heart is racing, palms clammy.

You gulp your last dry gulp. It’s time to begin your pitch.

This can be one of the scariest parts of your entire career – pitching something you’ve worked hard on for weeks, months even, to your clients.

Knowing they could (metaphorically) throw it at the wall, leaving you heartbroken…rejected… standing in the cold rain on your own….

Luckily, it doesn’t have to be this way.

Because my anxiety-riddled ass is going to help you ace your pitch. You can trust me, we’re in this together now.

Unfortunately, you can’t just rock up with your simple slide deck and a few talking points and expect to woo anybody. You need to create an engaging presentation that will showcase the value of your idea to your clients in a way they can’t deny.

So, here are 5 simple strategies that will make your pitch (almost) irresistible.

Trend Plug - Why Don’t You Stay Awhile?

This latest trend comes from a 16-year-old song!

'Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?' by She & Him is taking over the TikTok algorithms like no other! The music video (which, might I add, is so cool) features Zooey Deschanel singing her heart out. The trending lyrics go, 'Why don't you sit right down and stay awhile? We like the same things and I like your style'.

Now we're seeing sound being used to describe how our inner monologue sounds when we meet someone we JUST know we're going to get along with. Examples range from 'literally me in a different font' to other interesting traits like 'when someone feels like Thursdays, freshly baked cookies and the smell of coffee'.

How to jump on this trend:

Start with this audio and lipsync to the song. Get creative with the onscreen text by describing when you meet someone you know you will get along with. Remember--the more niche, the better.

A few ideas to get you started:

  • When I meet a client who's willing to experiment and has my humour

  • When I meet an intern who just gets me, has the same coffee order, and likes to keep my meetings short and sweet.

  • When I meet a coworker that's light pink, summer sunsets, and smells like unlimited Canva Pro

Ask the Editor

Q - I run a charity that works with people with low vision. How can I raise awareness for this cause on social media? -Kumar

Hey Kumar!

If your goal is raising awareness, you're going for reach. And if you're going for reach, you want to create content that's super shareable. Because not only does this mean your audience will want to share it with their friends. Creating content that gets shared is one of the best ways to get the algorithm to keep pushing it to more people.

The most shareable content is usually entertaining or relatable. So think about how you can bring these elements into your videos.

Especially when it comes to your niche, there can be a fine line. You definitely don't want to create content that will offend people! But, at the same time, you may be able to bring some humour into your videos. Whatever your angle, think about what kind of content people will want to share, then just start creating!
